The Toy Retailers Association (TRA) was first established as the National Association of Toy Retailers in 1950 and changed its name first to the British Assocation (BATR) and then simply the Toy Retailers Association in 2005. It acts as both a watchdog and persuader to ensure fair play for toy retailers and represents the toy retail sector on government panels and safety organisations in the UK.
Members include Toys R Us, Early Learning, Mothercare, Argos, Hamleys, Smyths, Toy Town, The Entertainer and many independent shops including members of the Toymaster and AIS/Playroom buying groups.
The TRA is a Company Limited by Guarantee and controlled by its Members who elect leaders from amongst themselves each year. All the Directors are volunteers and actively involved in the retailing of toys.
Toy Retailers - whether based on in the high street, trading estates or online are all invited to join the Association provided they are VAT registered and comply with the Association's Code of Practice which reflects the high standards required in selling products for children. Suppliers and Inventors
If you are selling or developing toys then the TRA is not the most appropriate organisation for you. The British Toy and Hobby Association is the Trade body for manufacturers, and EQUITOY serves importers. Both offer some advice on standards but you will need to consult specialists or laboratories to get certification for new products. The Trade Magazines (see contacts) and UK Toy Fair provide advertising and promotional routes to retailers.
